The concept for the first edition of The neptic-psychotherapeutic treatment handbook for substance abuse originated with the Rt. Revd. Dr. Andrew Vujisić, (in the world, Dr. Zoran Vujisić), during his postdoctoral research on the impact of neptic-psychotherapy on depressive symptomatology and comorbid anxiety in 2009. In the original 725-page neptic-psychotherapeutic treatment manual, (which focused on neptic-psychotherapeutic treatment), Dr. Vujisić  incorporated public domain materials published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The volume was then licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 UK: England & Wales License in 2012, and distributed free-of-charge. That first edition has now been reviewed, updated, and revised. The new edition provides detailed information and material related to neptic-psychotherapeutic theory, interventions, and treatment, together with practical tools informed by public domain materials, including: (a) client counseling approaches/models, session goals, and formats; (b) client progress models, early recovery skills, and crisis intervention; (c) relapse prevention, relapse prevention groups, and social support groups; and (d) client handouts and worksheets. The model is currently being used by the Romanian and Russian Orthodox Churches in substance abuse treatment programs.

This volume is a benchmark in the scientific examination of the Eastern Christian psychotherapeutic paradigm, and a pioneering step towards an integrated model for neptic, existential, and transpersonal psychotherapy. Dr. Vujisić's work presents a clear understanding of human psychology from an Orthodox perspective, (i.e., a psychology and psychiatry consistent with the cosmology and soteriology of Orthodoxy). His empirical investigation of the relationship of spirituality and neuroscience is an indispensable dimension in the development of a global notion of research in science and religion, and is particularly important as globalized attempts at rapprochement on interreligious and transcultural levels prevail. In the current atmosphere of increased attention by scholars to the relationship between spirituality and science, religion and physical/mental health, and holistic views of human beings that connect the body, mind, and spirit, this volume provides a framework in the establishment of cross-cultural and holistic dimensions to the study of science and spirituality. Ultimately, it bridges the divide between mystical, neptic, and hesychastic teachings and the methods and goals of modern Western psychotherapy. It offers a potential meeting of the transcendent and the secular, of spirituality and psychotherapy, and of neptic treatment and mind biochemistry as they impact those in need of inner healing from spiritual, behavioral, and/or psychological disorders and pathologies.

Never confuse the person, formed in the image of God, with the evil that is in him: because evil is but a chance misfortune, an illness, a devilish attack. But the very essence of the person is the image of God, and this remains in him despite every disfigurement.
